Had to have doctor this morning as I was literally crying in pain and OH called him. He has given me Oramorph - which I'm not that happy about.
Anyone else out there taken this please? I'd like to know a bit about it.
I am in SO much trouble with OH because I won't tkae it til I check it out.
Any quick ansers appreciated.
It's very important that you take the right amount
Oramorph is morphine as I am sure you know.
It might make you feel sick and it may make you
Giddy, and constipated, I expect there are a lot
Of people in here that has had this medication
It works as a rule within 20mins of taking.

Strong opioids are not recommended treatments for Fibro, partly because they are unlikely to offer good symptom relief (because opioids cannot work as effectively in someone with Fibro) and have strong possible side effects. However, they can be used for breakthrough pain and may be a suitable long-term treatment if you also have another condition for which they are a recommended treatment, or if you cannot take other medications.

I have been on Oramorph for a good many years now it is more used for break through pain but it still helps on its own and talking 2 Paracetamol tablets together with it will help to ease your pain. I am on a Morphine Patch which the Pain Cpnmsultant gave me for my Fibro and I use the Oramorph and Paracetamol if I need something stronger and this was advised by my GP as well. It can make you constipated but like all medications it has side effects you can take a laxitive if needed and of your only on 5mls then it won't make you sick its only if your on high doses then it can do, its safe to use only if you take the dose that is recommended you should go and see your GP if you need any advice.
Thank you so much. Doctor said that I shouldn't be afraid of it and that it may give some temporary relief. I am worried because I know it is used in cancer treatment, and when I am in so much pain my head imagines all sorts of things. Haven't stopped crying since he came - I am feeling so low.
When you are in so much pain and it is all attributed to fibro and rheumatoid how do you possibly know when something else may be wrong - because everything is put down to the fibro.
I'm waffling on now but 'head is in the shed'
I'll try the oramorph tomorrow - perhaps I'll be in a better place.

hi gardaqueen,ive been using oramorph along with mst (slow release morphine tablets) and other meds for some time now it does help take the edge of very severe pain but may make you feel a little light headed and give you a sicky feeling at first but I myself find that the relief I get from taking the oramorph well worth the side affects my morphine tablets have just been increased from 30mg twice a day to 60mg due to an increase in pain especially at night or if I do anything that requires me to walk ive also today had new x-rays done of my hips ,don't feel bad about taking something that might help you control the pain why put up with it when you don't need to huh I hope you do get some relief and start to feel a bit happier soon all the very best xx Pauline.

Hello Very-Grumpy I've been taking MST and Oramorph for a few years now and I did suffer constipation but I also found a cure to that - dried apricots. They taste delicious and really do the trick. so if anyone out there is suffering get some dried apricots or you could try chilled prune juice which is very nice too but vile if it is warm. I've also discovered that an apple a day keeps the constipation away.
This is a list of natural laxatives anyone suffering could also try
Combination of fresh pear and apple juice
Combination of orange juice and olive oil
Prune juice
Apple cider vinegar juice
Carrot juice
Spinach juice
Grapefruit juice
Asparagus juice
Lemon juice and hot water
Please don't think that I have a constipation fetish it's just that I was so ill with constipation that I read everything I could to ensure I was never that ill again.

I've just read your message thanks for the advice on what to take for Constipation what you suggested was useful to as my Gp gave me some sachets you mix with water but its Vile and makes me feel sick and want to heave! Hi Gardaqueen - Oramorph is perfectly safe to take in the correct dose, and for some people is very effective.
As Lindsay says it's not a recommended drug for fibro, but a lot of people get it prescribed and seem to get relief.
I take Tramadol, a related drug, which theoretically shouldn't work, but it suits me very well.
Don't worry about the fact that cancer patients are given Oramorph - it's a strong pain killer, so is appropriate for that use, but it is also given to people with fractures, post-operative pain and renal or gall-bladder colic, to name but some of its uses.
It's a particularly safe medicine in the prescribed dose, its only side effects, as people have said, being nausea and constipation. Not everyone is affected - I can take it without any nausea, but am happy with Tramadol.
Do try a couple of doses and see if it suits you - why suffer unnecessarily ?

I too like you have been given Oramorph along with Morphine tablets and like you am scared to take them.x
Please don't be scared to take Oramorph when you are taking MST. I am on 100mgs of MST per day and 4x5mls of Oramorph every 4 hours when I have a flare-up.
I would suggest that you try the dose your GP recommended and see how it goes. It may be that it really suits you and you are able to function with no problems. Obviously, if it makes you too light-headed or unwell stop taking it and go back to your GP but please don't write Oramorph off without trying it first as it may be the very drug that helps you the most controlling your pain. Sorry for being late on here but not having a good night.
When I was prescribed Oramorph my doctor increased the Lansoprazole because of my Hiatus Hernia and I do get bad reflux so if you have any tummy troubles then go careful as it may aggravate it.
Otherwise take it as it does help with the pain.

Thanks Terry that's interesting as I suffer with Reflux Oesophagitis and I've noticed after taking Oramorph that I get bad reflux but didn't male the connection between the two I take Nexium and my Gp did increase the dose but had little effect, I will go and see her about it! Hi there, I too have been taking both MST and Oramorph , I had been on Tramadol for sometime then had a spinal compression fracture at which point my GP told me to take Oramorph and then MST. I have tried Gabapentin and pregabalin, neither of which I could tolerate! However, I would say that you have no need to be frightened of Oramorph as long as you stick to the correct dosage, when I have muscle spasms which I am prone to, I do take Oramorph and find at higher dosage I get very itchy and have to take an antihistamine to counteract that. Finally, I don't think you GP would have prescribed it for you if he had thought it would cause you harm rather than good. I hope you find some relief soon.

i hope you are getting on with the oramorph. i am on slow realse morphine daily/night and oramorph 4 breakthro pain. i am on movicol to stop constiapation and antisickness tabs too. i have inflamation within my body but i cannot take any nsaids like iburphen so mophorine helps cover pains in joints too and fibro - i tried tramadol (made me ill) codine didnt help and i use gabapentin and dizapem to help with my fibro too! we all work different and i was reserved about the morphine use but if it helps then go with what works 4 u!

I'm perservering with it. Just going into another flare - hoping it helps as I've only been out of last one for about 3 weeks and I'm totally exhausted by it all.

I gave taken this along with fentanyl patches for 5 years now... Oral morph is great. But u do get side effects... Though if ur in flare up I don't think anything helps.. I once got told from a locum, that I was taken that much morphine it would kill a horse, and I felt fine lol xx so just be aware xxx
Hi they don't be frightened I have the same fibromyalgia and plus osteoarthritis and I do take omorphous and it's fantastic differently helps with the chronic pain I take it if I having a bad day with the pain. and it's does help people with fibromyalgia don't care what other people say it does help if you got fibromyalgia , how I see it that the medication there for reason and if it's takes the chronic pain away even if for a day or two that's good. that's why we have strong pain relief for chroinc pain. doctors just don't hand out pain relief for no reason. Good like hun and take the pain medicine even if you don't have it every day or just take it when you feeling in so much pain. that's what it is for. ☺☺☺☺
My consultant told me there was no medication for fibromyalgia however my doctor has given me Oramorph, Co-Codamol and Amitriptyline and they have all helped me loads.
Speak to your doctor and ask for Amitriptyline they are brilliant.
