Dear Brenda,

I sometimes have problems swallowing food too. I have not personally heard of Achalasia being associated with Fibromyalgia , However, some information on the internet mentions that Sjogrens Syndrome may be linked , see below in this NHS information as it is secondary condition that develops in combination with another autoimmune condition, such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis

Have you been diagnosed with Achalasia ? It would be interesting if your own Doctor could answer the question whether it is linked or not?

Here is a link about Achalasia for other who may be reading from the forum

I will be interested to hear if you find out any further information and the further comments on this thread.

Best Wishes

Emma

Having problems with swallowing is very common with having Fibromyalgia. If you click on the link below it will take you to many discussions we have had on the subject. This can be caused by tightening of the throat muscles. I have this myself first thing every morning, sometimes it takes two cups of tea for my throat to ease slowly.

However, Achalasia sounds more complex and more to do with the mechanics of swallowing and more to do with nerves as opposed to muscles.

I haven't heard of Achalasia before, it was interesting to read up on it. Thank you for your message Brenda and for bringing this to our attention.

My first thoughts on this was 'achawhat' and then I had to go look it up and I still do not understand it so it is going to take a second reading. I have awful problems swallowing, that is after I have gone through the pain if chewing. There is a lot to be said for soup lol. The problem I have now is more pronounced when I take meds. I think I have swallowed them and then I may cough and up come the tablets again. So annoying at times xxxxx
