Hi I have suffered from Fibromyalgia for over 7 years and for the last 18 months I have noticed whenever I eat a hot meal my nose runs, its very annoying and embarrassing when I am eating with family and also with friends has anyone else had this problem and do you think its fibro related. Thanks Dave

Hi Dave. We just had a curry delivered and both my husband and I were reaching for the tissues! I have Fibro but he doesn't. I think it a fairly common thing depending on the amount of heat in the meal. Take care. Jane x

Thanks Jane

I think I should have said a meal rather than something hot like a curry.

Hi, I too get a runny nose when eating spicy foods always have as does my man but what i have noticed and i believe is due to the fibro is i can't eat too spicy a things.

6 months ago we had made a hot curry and Paul had put hot whole green chillies in and it was lush but when it came to the big green ones he dared me to eat one and since he had and i'm competitive i did but it really wasn't a good idea as i had bad ears at the time so the burning sensation went up my ustation tube into me ear so i gulped a tonne of milk as by this point i was in tears with the pain in my ears and it didn't help so in a stupid jump around the kitchen way yelping i grabbed a jug, put milk in it and poured it down my ear....... well it worked .I'd like to say my man and daughter were sympathetic but no they were in tears laughing at me.

Hell it was painful but very funny even i was laughing :D

Hi Rachie 7879,

I really mean a meal not a curry or anything with hot stuff like chillies, so does your nose run with a meal not containing hot things. Dave

in reply to fibrodave

Sorry, but come to think of it yes and if I'm out walking( on good days) I also get where I feel the need to sniff constantly as if I have a cold, drives me and Paul insane. X

My nose runs constantly whether eating a curry or not. I had two sinus operations years ago and had my airways made bigger in my cheeks and forehead where my sinuses are. Since them I've had Perennial Rhinitis, which basically means streaming nose! I always have a tissue in my hand, dozens in my handbag, under my pillow, in the car, everywhere so I don't get caught out!

Oooh your experience with chillis and milk sound painful! The amazing this with me is that if I am eating a curry, my nose doesn't run as much, it's almost like the heat dries my nose up until a few hours later when it all starts again lol!

Hi LibertyZ

I really meant a meal not something hot like a curry or something with chillies in it, I have seasonal rhinitis and its bad I would hate to have perennial rhinitis I just wouldnt cope, how do you ?

Hi Nanny4

Thanks for understanding, I also have a condition called Urticaria and angiodeama my consultant prescribed Fexofenadine and Neoclarityn which are both high dose antihistamines, I have to take 1 of each tablet every day for the rest of my life or until they can find a cure, these antihistamines dont help stop my nose running though when I eat a meal (hot, warm) L O L, Thanks Dave

Hi. Dave ,its annoying ,my daughter suffers from angiodema, the doctors dont know why. She has a new consultant and hopefully he will be able to hrlp her, is it a type of vasculitis? It must be very scary? These conditions are really annoying.sandy.

Hi Sandy

The doctors dont know why it happened to me but one consultant told me that the lumps could also appear inside the body as they do on the outside, he did say that it could be a cause of diaharrer if the swelling was in the colon, I have had my left eye so swollen it looks like i have been knocked for six, I was once in a restaurant with my family and I had to leave during dinner, we think something in the meal set off the reaction, my face neck and throat began to get really swollen, I take a large amount of anti histamines and they seem to work now. I hope your daughter is helped but will you let me know what happens Thanks Dave

Hi Dave, thank you for your reply,i saw my daughter today and her. Skin has already broken out in painful sores some are tiny blisters on her fingers or sores the size of a 10 pence piece, she called the consultants secretary and they have arranged a blood test and skin biopsy on thursday, hopefully she will get some answers soon, she had been on steroids antimalarials and immune suppresants ,she was told to come of them, and she did a week ago,now her skin is sore already.bless her.my daughter did have about 8 anaphalactic reactions in the last year ,no one knows why, usually starts with the tingeling lips and tongue, then her mouth swells.I can only imagine how you must feel when it happens.if you find an answer to help the runny nose problem, can you let me know please.take care sandy.

I don't get a runny nose when I eat; but my eyes stream whenever I'm in sunshine, even in the middle of winter (ie outide the hayfever season) I look as if I'm sobbing my heart out. Sunglasses help a little .... but I think I'm just weird!

Hi Juleevh

No your not weird, my eyes run at the night time, even in a dark room, like the cinema before the picture comes on, its awful, I do have drops and they do help to lubricate my eyes but its a struggle at times, its after midnight now and I am wide awake even though I have had a sleeping pill at 7pm, I think Fibromyalgia is a plague as it has lots of other stuff attached, I was as fit as a fiddle before I got Fibro then I went downhill and got condition after condition, I have spent more time going to see Doctors and now I am on about 58 pills a day for one thing and another. Sorry about the rant .... Dave

Feel free to rant Dave, it gets it all off your chest and we all understand here. We are all here for you as we are for each other. :)

I have streaming eyes too - even the slightest bit of light sometimes, even muted daylight and they're streaming! Very often people say to me "Have you been crying?" - it can be very frustrating especially wearing eye makeup as I do. Mine stream all year round, perhaps this symptom is more common than we think Julie?!

Even my sunglasses still make my eyes stream, I have hunted everywhere for darker lensed fashion sunglasses and can't find any that stop the streaming! So it's waterproof makeup and avoiding too bright lights! Even the light from the tv is too bright for me sometimes. I am constantly adjusting the contrast and brightness and driving my hubby nuts lol! :P

21 years a fibro sufferer and 21 years with runny nose when I eat anything hot, and I don't mean spicy as I avoid that, makes it ten times worse. I keep a tissue in my hand at all times and my family never notice now. I have never found anything to link it but I do wonder if it is linked. But also if you have not eaten much through the day and your blood sugars drop a bit, suddenly eating pushing the blood sugars back up and you sweat. So that could also be the answer.
