Thanks Jules, they were definately for FM,but my Dr. seems very good, so i think we are trying different things. Also i had an ulcer about 12/14 years ago ans have had upper stomache discomfort since taking them, i was wondering what pain meds you were on? thanks again for helping me, sending hugs.x

Hi, have you tried Amitriptyline yet? Many do have good results with it. Helps you sleep too. I take 40 mg as and when I need it but others take it every night. You can see by the poll on this page that it is fairly well used.

Hi Susie I take tramadol daily which helps take the edge of the pain and has done for the past 5 months, I take Oxycodone if the pain is really bad, again this only makes it so that i can breathe. I take Gabapentin which lots of people take for FM and I also take Venafalaxine for depression and HRT due to having had a hysterectomy. On these medications i can walk 10 meters in pain and the rest of the time i'm in a wheelchair as I am mainly affected in my knees, hips, pelvis and lower back although at the moment i am suffering badly with my left shoulder...Hope this helps and good luck x

Hi Susie,

I also had a stomach ulcer down to not taking any stomach lining meds along side Naproxen. If youve already had an ulcer I am so suprised your allowed to take them! I have been told never to take any anti inflamitaries again now. I would take another visit to your gp and check it out. I'm taking Co-Codamol and Gabapentin which help but its a bit up and down.

Hope you get it sorted

Sharon xx

thanks for your replies , i think my Dr. is trying to find something for me, he also gave me Omeprazole for my stomache, i have to be honest and say i dont want to take tramadol, but i see gabapentin is taken a lot but i thought it made you sleepy or feel sick? its a nightmare really, i dont think anything seems to be brilliant. love and hugs to all, xxx

Glad your on omeprazole, I just can't help it as soon as I see someones on Naproxen I have to ask that! Having the bleeding ulcer and going into hospital was a nightmare and set me off on one big flare up thats not really gone away. My gp put me on gabapentin and co-codamol and said because I'm so short in height etc that she didn't no how I wasn't knocked out and still able to function etc at work, but I do somehow but I am really tired all of the time.

I do feel really reliant on them though more and more, as in I could take them earlier and earlier some days! so hopefully they won't get to the stage where they're not helping at all!

Hope you get sorted, take care and have a good weekend xx

I had said many ttimes that my painkillers didn't work until once I forgot to ask for a new prescription and for a weekend I had to go without my painkiller and then I really found out how well they worked. I found this again when I was taken off the tablets and put on pain patches, the pain was horrendous, like electric shocks going through my body, i had to go back on the tablets.

So although we think there don't work I found out that they do !!!!!!!

Naproxen is one of those drugs that need to build up in your system to work. Ive been taking a 500mg naproxen with 2 x 500mg co codamol to dull the the pain. Having a bad few weeks where it doesnt seem to have any effect on the pain. Ive come to the point where I can either be girny and tired and in pain or awake and more alert and in pain.

I was prescribed Naproxen to try recently but they didnt help at all, and gave me really bad acid reflux, so ive stopped them.

I had Naproxen some time ago but like most here it upset my gastric reflux and gave me severe heartburn so I didn't take it for long. I think they're an anti inflammatory and most A.I 's upset my stomach

thankyou for all your replies, i think i agree with you all thst they certainly give me bad acid reflux, even with the omeprazole, and just like you Helen i had terrible heart burn with them, so i stopped taking them ,but if they are meant to build up in system ,well can see why isnt working.

It is all such hard work, i was thinking perhaps i will use co-codamal or co- dydramol, perhaps reflux wont be as bad, hugs to all. xxx

Hi Susie, i was also given naproxen, but had to stop them, they gave me really bad stomach pain and the runs. I am now on tramadol SR, pregabalin 2x150 morning and night amatriptaline 2x25 nightly paracetamol when needed am also on HRT and fluxotin for depression but trying to come of that.

I was on the ordinary tramadol max dose they done nothing for me, but everyone is different, keep trying until you get one that suits you or ask to get refered to the CPC. :) xx

thanks Anne, i am afraid my GP.didnt tell me that, i will let him off as he was really trying to think hard about what he could give me, i will take my co- codomol till i see him again, thankyou for your advice, xxx

Hi Susie i was and still have to take naproxen as an anti inflammatory as i have problems with my legs burning up and refusing to hold my weight so to speak. The docs says it is a nerve problem in my legs and part of FM. I have to take Omeprazole as the Naprosyn gives me terrible heartburn although lately i find settlers tums do just as well. My back pain never goes although some days easier than others to move so I am on tramadol, diazepam (for seizures but doc gonna stop these afterr this lot), propanolol for tremors and anxiety, prozac for the depression. Amitryptilline for the sleep and migraines. Because of my weight gain (which triggers the depression again) i have been told to stop gabapentin as they give you weight probs. I get conflicting advice all the time. I jst wanna stop taking so many pills and have some energy for a change.

Naproxen is an anti-imflammatory drug which is used to FM, but it can be hard on the tummy and in result cause an increase in migraines, i.e. analgesia stimulated migraines. You definitely need to be on meds for your tummy, i.e. Lansoprazole to prevent stomache ulcerations. There are a few options for pain relief, ranging from Ibuprofen, Paracetamol to Tramadol MR (slow release taken twice daily every 12 hours) and anti-neuropathic pain meds such as Gabapentin. There is also a drug which is currently being used in Edinburgh's hospitals called Tapentadol. This is an opaite based drug (controlled meds, morphine based) which is very good for neuropathic pain. It is more successful than Tramadol but less severe than Morphine-based. Non-drug therapies include acupuncture to lower back which in effect helps his, legs and knees. You should ask for a Pain Clinic referral asap to give you options. Also,to help pain, you should do some research into how diet affects FM. Stimulants like caffiene, sugar, additives, too much dairy, etc can be poisinous to our bodies which result in worsening FM symptoms such as pain. Also, ask your GP to get bloods done, focusing on Vitamin D levels, CRP and ESR levels to see how severe the inflammation and therefore pain is. Vitimain B Complex and Vitamin D with Calcium aids pain relief, brain fog and fatigue. Vitamin B Complex can also settle tummy upsets, but so does peppermint tea. As per other posts you must remember that each person will differ so what works for one may not work for another. I hope this helps. Healing thoughts. xxx

Anti-inflammatories are not used for Fibro, though they can be used for things you get alonside the Fibro, such as tendonitis.

Fibro is not inflammatory, so if your ESR and CRP blood tests come back positive, you need to find out what else is going on.
